Have you ever wondered, why do we avoid people who talk more? It means that we do not want to listen to what so-and-so says. Certainly, it is the inability of the hearers, which is blamed on the speaker. Otherwise, have you ever heard that the speaker is tired of speaking and the listener is saying that dear, speak more. What happens is that the listener gets tired first. And the speaker? Not even later. This is not a new thing. People have been eager to listen for centuries. Vedic man prays, ‘शृण्वाम शरद: शतम।’
Vedanti is sitting in silence, waiting by closing his eyes and closing his ears to listen to Nadbrahm. And the major achievements in this direction has been achieved by those poets, who here kept listening to the silent silence of the universe, even the request of the beloved in silent voices. And today someone narrates hundred things to us, someone says something after listening to us and we are not heard anywhere. Still we request, speak Lord, when will you listen? Do you see this injustice? Means are you listening? That only God will tell that we have become used to listening, and listening is inferior, speaking is superior. Still sometimes the mind gets so much to say that just a perplexing silence envelops the mind, nothing is said. I have heard that Maharishi Valmiki too was once silent, suddenly his voice burst out after shaking with the shrill sounds of anguish. The agony of our mind is not like that. This is the intense pain of years, which can be lightened if told, but know that lightening by saying is not a proper response to pain.
It was being discussed that listening is inferior, speaking is superior. We know this scientific fact that speaking and listening are two parts of the same action, they are not complete in themselves. But it is also seen that today many people want to speak, but they are not allowed to speak, and people want to listen to them, but are unable to listen.
It is also seen that many people speak, and no one listens, yet they speak. It is also seen that many people do not want to listen, but they have to listen. This again proves that speaking and listening are two parts of the same action, relative to each other. Being silent like this, listening, is also healthy. By keeping a silent fast, the power that is destroyed in vain is accumulated. The thing is believable. When the mind is weakened by disbelief and failure, then silence gives strength. And if the reason for remaining silent is that you do not understand what to say, then it is better to remain silent for a while and think what to say. But if your reason for remaining silent is the belief that 'Silence is Gold', then know that there is never as much remorse for speaking unnecessarily as for remaining silent when there is a need. This is because speaking is our best duty, it is also the easiest medium of expression, and we cannot live by not speaking, you don't listen, they will listen, and it follows from this that if we (humans) speak, you should listen.
Silence is more eloquent than words. ~ Thomas Carlyle
