"Years ago when I entered the film industry, I was a slim, serious young man. I had a passion to sing well. My idols were names like K.L. Saigal and Khemchand Prakash, whose names would echo the existence of the film industry. I always looked up to these two stalwarts as examples for myself. My initial efforts as a playback singer were very successful. Khemchand Prakash used to think that one day I will start singing very well. His thinking was not wrong either. But here my career thread came in the hands of some 'visionary' people. They decided that this new boy should be taught some gentleness. They thought I was adapting myself to a style that would soon be of no use. Just as yesterday's newspaper becomes useless for today. They felt that I should adapt to tomorrow. One such gentleman advised me, 'Don't sing like that. It's a little too simple. Put some spices in it. Do some boom chick type thing. Add jazz and yodeling to it.' Another said, 'There is no future in playback singing. Get into acting. This is where the money is.

Such advice kept coming. I kept on implementing them. It didn't take me long to change myself. A serious and idealistic boy soon became a proud young man who finds fault in others. I no longer had any respect for traditions. Overall, I was very fast becoming the Kishore Kumar you all know. I will never forget that day for the rest of my life, when I also made fun of my Guru (Mentor) Khemchand Prakash ji. Now it won't work. Now people want jazz. The listeners like yodeling.' He was very angry. He not only reprimanded me a lot, but also warned that I would repent one day. Today I understood that he was right . But then I had no doubt that he was wrong.
Circumstances were with me then, so I experimented with more yodeling and jazz in the songs. The songs were also hits. This ghost of experimentation did not last only till the song. As an actor also I repeated it. Then there were a lot of films coming to me and I went on doing comedy with enthusiasm. The formula was that I had to do stupid things from stupidity.
I was sure that this is what the public wants too. Be it my films or songs, it was becoming a constant hit. I used to wonder who the critics are to say that my way of acting is bad. After all, I'm doing what the people want. Later on I realized that I was a stupid prankster. I observed I was someone who ran after money, who had let himself down on the belief that people were liking his movies."
One who can listen to melodious music even in heavy noise, he/she achieves great achievement. - Vikram Sarabhai
